Chocolate Gravy: A Sweet Tradition From Our Family Table
There are some recipes you make because they’re good.
And then there are recipes you make because they taste like home.
Chocolate Gravy is both.
Growing up in Northeast Mississippi, Chocolate Gravy wasn’t unusual to me. It was simply something our family made. It showed up on ordinary mornings from time to time, but it was especially loved on holidays, birthdays, and celebration days.
It was one of those foods that meant something special was happening.
As I grew older and had a family of my own, I carried the tradition with me. And somewhere along the way, the recipe that had been handed down to me became part of my children’s memories, too.
Today, when our whole family is together—especially during the holidays—Chocolate Gravy is still a much-loved tradition.
And on Christmas morning, it is a must.
A Christmas Morning Tradition
There is something about a house full of family on Christmas morning.
People are gathered in the kitchen. Someone is making coffee. Biscuits are warm from the oven. Bacon is sizzling—or, if I’ve planned well, already waiting on a platter.
And there is a pot of Chocolate Gravy on the stove.
One of our favorite ways to serve it is with warm biscuits, butter, and a side of bacon. The salty bacon alongside that rich, sweet chocolate is just delicious.
Most people in our family split open a warm biscuit, butter it generously, and drizzle Chocolate Gravy over the top.
But my sister and I have always eaten ours a little differently.
We pour the warm Chocolate Gravy into a bowl, add butter, and eat it with a buttered biscuit.
And now some of our children eat it that way, too.
Apparently, family traditions include not only what you eat, but exactly how you eat it!
Either way, it is a decadent delicacy.
What Exactly Is Chocolate Gravy?
If you didn’t grow up in the South—or perhaps even in our particular part of the South—the words Chocolate Gravy may sound a little strange.
It isn't gravy in the traditional savory sense. It’s a warm chocolate sauce made from simple pantry ingredients: milk, flour, sugar, and cocoa.
As it cooks, it becomes smooth, rich, and thick enough to spoon over a warm biscuit.
And despite how indulgent it tastes, there is nothing complicated about it.
Maybe that is one reason I love this recipe so much.
It is made from ordinary ingredients, but when those ingredients are gathered together with people you love, they become part of something much bigger.
They become a memory.
From Our Family Table to Yours
This recipe has been handed down through generations of my family, and sharing it here feels a little like opening our kitchen door and inviting you inside.
That's exactly what I hope this little corner of Westminster Accents can be.
I don't simply want to share recipes. I want to share the stories that live alongside them—the meals we remember, the people who taught us, the traditions we carry forward, and the simple act of gathering people around a table.
So I've made something special for you.
Along with the recipe below, I've created a printable Westminster Recipe Keepsake Card for Chocolate Gravy. You can print it, tuck it into your recipe box, and perhaps begin a tradition of your own.
And if you make it, I hope you'll serve it with warm biscuits, plenty of butter, and a little bacon on the side.
Whether you drizzle it over your biscuit or eat it from a bowl like my sister and me, I hope you enjoy every bite.
More than that, I hope there are people you love gathered around the table when you do.
From our family table to yours, enjoy.
Pam
